Polyphasic Sleep: The Monophasics Strike Back.

Due to several misunderstandings I have been forbidden to continue the process of adapting to polyphasic sleep and return to the terrible world of the monophasic sleeper. This is only in place until I am age 18 and am settled into my room. This is well with me as I have decided that next time I will go the hardcore route and go Dymaxion. Until then I am back to the pathetic world of monophasic and only having 16 hours a day in which to accomplish my goals. See you all in a month and three days.

Polyphasic Sleep Day 11

due to illness I barely slept at 0200, and then continued to try to sleep until I finally fell asleep around 0640 and slept until 1030 I am feeling somewhat better and will continue my sleep schedule now.

  • 1400-1430: I fell asleep with out a problem and woke up to my alarm with out a problem.
  • 1800-1830: I half napped while at a friends house.
  • 2200-2230: I was unable to make this nap because people were being loud, disrespectful, and obnoxious. Because I was upset with people for behaving this way and being a bunch of lazy pieces of shits rather than doing their chores like they have been being told to since this morning before I even woke up I have been told to discontinue the sleep schedule. FAT FUCKING CHANCE!

Polyphasic Sleep Day 10

  • 0200-0230: Falling asleep seems to get easier each time and more peaceful.
  • 0600-0630: My alarm rolled away and I slept in I am getting sick of things like this happening. I need to find an alarm loud enough to wake me up that doesn't need to be right next to my ear.
  • 1000-1030: I took this nap in the car while Michelle and the parents were gone for her doctors appointment
  • 1400-1430: I napped in the back pretty easily and woke up with out the alarm going off which is amazing.
  • 1800-1830: Again I napped in the back after returning from the college and again I woke up with out the alarm, I believe that my body is beginning to make the final adjustments.
  • 2200-2230: I again woke up with out the alarm, this is going rather well.

8.17.2009

Polyphasic Sleep Day 9

I started this day off by going to sleep deliberately for a longer period of time than normal because I was feeling ill and I then slept it off. I didn't wake up until halfway through my 1000 nap.
  • 1400-1430: I fell asleep with ease although I was worried I wouldn't since I chose to sleep through my illness.
  • 1800-1830:I took a break from working and was able to catch this nap, once it was done I jumped back into working with out a hitch.
  • 2200-2230: I had some problems falling asleep but after awhile I was out like a light.

8.16.2009

Polyphasic Sleep Day 8

  • 0200-0230: I needed to skip this nap as well which was hell.
  • 0600-0630: I caught up on my two missed naps along with this one
  • 1000-1030: I slept in the back of a pick up on the way to church for this one.
  • 1400-1430: I skipped this nap to spend time with my dad and his girlfriend.
  • 1800-1830: I slept until 8pm in order to catch up on my missed nap
  • 2200-2230: I only slept for about 20 minutes and woke up before the alarm went off.
I have found out that if I miss a nap that if I add 1.5 hours to my next time I feel the same and don't crash at all.

I am positive now that the hardest part of adjusting is over now, and am glad to say that I think this was easier than expected and staying to this system will be easy as well.

8.15.2009

Polyphasic Sleep Day 7

  • 0200-0230: I was having a hard time getting to sleep but I did manage to catch some Zs
  • 0600-0630: I fell asleep almost immediately and then crashed after I woke up, I assume this is because of the nap I missed yesterday.
  • 1000-1030: I crashed through this nap :(
  • 1400-1430: I fell asleep quickly and feel like I have managed to pull myself back into the schedule.
  • 1800-1830: I made this nap with surprising ease, considering that there were event activities going on downstairs
  • 2200-2230:I had to skip this nap and make up for it later.
Todays posts will be somewhat spread out or late as I am at a reenactment event.

8.14.2009

Polyphasic Sleep Day 6

  • 0200-0230: I feel asleep rather easily however waking up was somewhat difficult
  • 0600-0630: Falling asleep was easy and waking up was to, the hard part was crawling out from under the blanket.
  • 1000-1030: I fell asleep on the couch with ease even though there was a lot of commotion in the living room.
  • 1400-1430: I had to skip this nap due to the fact that I was out running errands with my folks and was not in a position in which I could nap. I actually took a 110 minute nap once I arrived back home and felt just as refreshed as I would have if I had had my nap.
  • 1800-1830: I made this nap with no problems.
  • 2200-2230: Again I made this nap without a problem.

8.13.2009

Polyphasic Sleep Day 5

  • 1400-1430: I fell asleep almost immediately so hopefully oversleeping by nearly 6 hours won't have been to much of a set back.
  • 1800-1830: I fell asleep easily again, and I found a solution to my alarm issue so from now on it should be good.
  • 2200-2230: I couldn't fall asleep this time which is a shame because I am awfully tired.

Polyphasic Sleep The Fail

Today was a total fail, however I will pick back up on my naps this afternoon.

8.12.2009

Polyphasic Sleep Day 4

  • 0200-0230: Falling asleep and waking up were both extremely easy.
  • 0600-0630: I did pretty well with falling asleep, however I didn't really want to wake up at all this time.
  • 1000-1030: I overslept by almost an hour, I am not sure what happened the alarm went off and is still set so I must have slept through it.
  • 1400-1430: I fell asleep easily again, I think this is getting a lot easier.
  • 1800-1830: Even though I over slept at 1000 I am not feeling anything I am hoping that it won't have set me back. I fell asleep and woke up with even more ease than I did at 0200.
  • 2200-2230: I fell asleep as soon as I hit the mattress although I don't remember being tired. Something new though, I had a dream which is odd for me because I haven't had a dream in several months.

8.11.2009

Polyphasic Sleep Day 3

  • 0200-0230: I am somewhat nervous about this day, everything I have read so far is that this day and the tenth day are the hardest, although these same sources have said that the time between the two days is not that bad and once you make it past day 10 you should be fine First time this sleep has ever been successful, I am quite proud of this, however I do feel sleepy. I did have some issues staying awake after this sleep, I am hoping that it doesn't continue on through out today, all though I will be content if I can manage to go today making every nap without over sleep.
  • 0600-0630: This sleep went very well I managed to wake up with the alarm with no problem.
  • 1000-1030: I woke up early from this sleep I turned my alarm off before it had a chance to go off. I feel completely exhausted at this point in time which means this is working. I am finding that this day gets easier as it gets closer to the end of it. I have forgone all caffeinated beverages because I believe that if can make it through what is supposed to be the hardest day then the rest of the adjustment period should be rather easy.
  • 1400-1430: Slept pretty well and falling asleep wasn't a problem. I think that the adapting will be very easy.
  • 1800-1830: I looked forward to this was and I was rewarded with an extremely peaceful sleep, only one more of the day and I will have made it through the third day.
  • 2200-2230: I went to sleep with ease all though I only slept for 15 minutes and couldn't sleep anymore.

Import

I decided to import my other blog, "A Root in the Digital World", for the purpose of convenience.

Polyphasic Sleep Day 2

  • 0200-0230: Damn it, I forgot to set my alarm and failed to wake up at 0230, this will make switching all the harder, I will have to be sure to set my alarms. I didn't wake up until 0730. I will go ahead and still take naps at the designated time, my body needs to become accustomed to it. I had no problems falling asleep initially
  • 0600-0630: Woke up at 0730, was not awake before this sleep, still tired. I will experiment with sound and light cues some with the next sleep. I am interested to see how my next few sleeps go, now that I have slipped back into monophasic instead of finishing the process of converting to polyphasic it may be even more difficult. Also I am going to be out of the house for my 1000 sleep and possibly my 1400 and I am curious as to how well I will be able to sleep.
  • 1000-1030: I actually manged to sleep rather peacefully in the van, I missed the first five minutes of the sleep due to the fact that I was still in the dentist chair being evaluated. I feel pretty good about this, I am still feeling the effects of the sleep deprivation and I am hoping that the extended sleep won't affect the process of becoming polyphasic.
  • 1400-1430: Falling asleep this time was easy, I had no problems what so ever.
  • 1800-1830: This sleep went of without a hitch, I can feel the effects of sleep deprivation coming on strongly this time, however I do feel somewhat refreshed.
  • 2200-2230: Prior to this sleep I found what I hope will be a useful tool. This MP3 track is designed to help one fall asleep and then wake up, I downloaded the 26 minute track and using Audacity dragged it out the last four minutes of my nap time, it was actually more annoying with its loud white noise through ought the track and the chicken noises designed to wake up the sleeper. Also I found this tool which I will begin using tomorrow. This is another sleep which has gone of effortlessly I am pleased with my apparent progress, even with the accidental over sleep this morning. I have been inspired to create my own sleep track however.

  • I am extremely upset with myself, and it might be silly to be, however forgetting to set my alarms is so stupid its almost childish. I have corrected the problem by setting alarms on an old cell phone to notify when it is time for the nap and when it is time to wake up.

I have found that drinking a cup of tea and eating a slice of bread or toast before napping is helpful with making the nap. Also that I am not as hungry around meal time but need to eat a small snack after waking up.

Polyphasic Sleep Day 1 - Explanation and start of the log

My reason for starting this schedule is I believe it will be beneficial once I start online classes on the 24th by allowing me more time during the day to spend on classes. The schedule I will be following is known as the uberman schedule and will take some adjusting to, my sleep schedule will be as follows:
    • 0200-0230
    • 0600-0630
    • 1000-1030
    • 1400-1430
    • 1800-1830
    • 2200-2230
I will be considering the "start" of each day the end of my 0200 sleep, and the "end" of each day the start of my 0200 sleep.

    1. 0200-0230: I began the sleep schedule with no success, I did not fall asleep at all, I tried meditating with no luck.
    2. 0600-0630: I fell asleep this time, however I overslept by an hour.
    3. 1000-1030: I decided to skip this sleep since I overslept by an hour.
    4. 1400-1430: I found myself looking forward to this sleep, I assume its because I skipped the 1000. I had almost no problems falling asleep and my alarm woke me up rather gently. I do feel rather refreshed although not entirely, I am hoping that this goes as well as it is said to.
    5. 1800-1830: I was somewhat tired when it came time for this sleep, however I was still rather refreshed from the 1400 sleep. I found myself moving between absent thoughts and sleep erratically through ought this nap.
    6. 2200-2230: I didn't sleep at all because people refused to keep the volume down for a mere 30 minutes, they do not understand the challenges of switching from a monophasic sleep schedule to a polyphasic sleep schedule, especially one with out a "core" sleep. I am beginning to feel the effects of sleep deprivation however I hope to counter them with the first sleep of tomorrow.

Gurrney - DMCA, DRM, and your Rights Pt. 2

DRM was initially used as a way to prevent the piracy, or selling illegal copies, of films, music, and games in their digital forms and to protect the rights of the people who created the films, music, and games, however DRM is now used to take away the rights of the consumer. Under the DRM laws you, the consumer, do not have the right to create a backup copy of your DVDs, music CDs, or game DVDs and game CDs. If these physical devices are damaged then you no longer have the right to posses its contents unless you purchase another copy from a legitimate source. Even ripping the contents of a legally acquired DVD or CD and placing it syncing it onto an iPod is a violation of the DRM laws, instead groups like the RIAA and MPAA want you to purchase the film or music in its physical form and then purchase a "digital copy" which could be created using software such as Alcohol 120% which is widely available on the internet. Simply put, it costs you $20 to purchase the right to view a movie, $15 to listen to an audio CD, and anywhere from $4 to $80 or more to play a video game; however the money you spend on these privileges doesn't give you the right to OWN the content.
Even more ridiculous under the DRM is the way in which it affects artist. An artist who signs on with a major label, such as Roadrunner Records or Virgin Records, no longer earns any of their songs which are published under the label. One such example involves artists Weird Al and James Blunt; in which James gave Al permission to create a track parodying his song "You're Beautiful." the track was to titled "You're Pitiful." however Weird Al is not allowed to profit from this track because Blunt's label, Atlantic Records, informed him that he did not have the RIGHT to give permission to Weird Al to parody HIS song and then revoked James's permission. No loner is DRM a group of laws used to prevent piracy, it is now a set of laws used to PROFIT big name label records and special interest groups such as the RIAA and the MPAA instead of PROTECTING the artist, DRM is NOT about intellectual property as we are led to believe it is about money.

Gurrney - DMCA, DRM, and your rights. Pt. 1

The DMCA (See this for a simplified explination) is no where near an act which benefits an average person who uses technology, nor are the DRM laws. The DMCA and DRM laws are meant to work together in harmony in such a way that simply ripping a CD and putting the tracks onto a multimedia device, such as an iPod, or modifying your game console can land you in jail.

As far as groups such as the RIAA and the MPAA are concerned when you purchase a DVD, CD, Blu-Ray Disc, an SD card pre-loaded with music, a mp3 track from an online store such as iTunes, a mp4 film, or an audiobook from services such as audibles you do not "own" the content contained on the physical device or the information contained with in digital files; instead you have purchased the "privilige" of listening to or viewing the file. If you, as the user, make a copy of any of the above listed physical devices or digital files as a backup copy or to give (not sell) to a friend or family member you are now a criminal in the eyes of groups such as the RIAA and the MPAA, even burning copies of tracks which you have downloaded from an online store to a CD to listen in your car will flag you as a criminal. These simple actions are not just misdemeanors but felonies which can earn you time in federal prisons.

Under the DMCA modifying a game console, creating and or installing custom firmware for devices such as the iPod or a TI Calulator, or even OPENING an electronic device for repairs can earn you jail time because even though you "purchased" the electronic device you still do not have the right to do what you want with your "property". Also under the DMCA search results are filtered based upon content which may violate the DMCA, often at the bottom of a google page one will find a notice similar to this:
"In response to a complaint we received under the US Digital Millennium Copyright Act, we have removed 1 result(s) from this page. If you wish, you may read the DMCA complaint that caused the removal(s) at ChillingEffects.org."
I invite you to visit the page listed as an offender agaisnt the DMCA, you will find that the websites first and foremost goal is to educate you, a citizen of the U.S.A, on your rights under the DMCA, DRM, and other similar laws and acts. Not only is it your right to be educated but it is also your obligation to ensure that you are educated about how a law, group of laws, or an act which has been put into place by congress and the senate effects you and your life style. However the DMCA would rather you didn't know your rights underneath it and would love to use it as a way to frighten you.
